Sydney Catholic Schools

Sonic workplace design that mirrors the building’s unique interior and local nature.

Moodsonic partnered with Valeo Technology to introduce soundscaping at this long-standing educational head office in the heart of Sydney.

Design objectives

Sydney Catholic Schools’ headquarters is a showcase for the quality of their 150 schools, and also functions as a place for work, religious activities, relaxation and entertainment.

The objectives were to (i) mirror the interior’s emphasis on wellbeing and biophilic design, (ii) create distinct activity-based zones using sound, and (iii) amplify the unique visual design to create immersive experiences for visitors.

Activity-based soundscape zones

Sydney Catholic School utilizes an activity-based open-plan layout, including quieter focused work and louder, more collaborative work.

The building’s content plan reflects this layout, with soundscapes for attention and privacy used in some zones, and more stimulating, energetic soundscapes in others.

Regional, bespoke soundscapes

Moodsonic’s library of soundscapes includes content based on natural sites across Australia. Rottnest Island, which takes listeners on an auditory journey around the nature reserve, is used in many open working areas due to its regional relevance and circadian schedules.

Sydney Catholic School also commissioned bespoke soundscape themes to reflect specific elements of the visual design, including a seasonal Gregorian chant soundscape for the site’s chapel, which incorporates a seasonal variation to represent the liturgical calendar.
